Another name for Čakovec is the town of the Zrinski family. There is an old Zrinski citadel there, where a dragon is hiding. A legend says that a green dragon sleeps under the Old citadel, while his tail lies under the church of St Nicholas.
Be careful – you should never wake up a dragon!
The defensive walls of Čakovec were built by Dimitrije Čaki, after whom the town was named.
Did you know that the first railway track in Croatia was laid through Čakovec? The townspeople were the first to experience the thrills of riding on a train, which is why they have a museum of classic cars and other vehicles.
