Osijek is the largest town in eastern Croatia. It lies on the plains by the river Drava. In Roman times it was called Mursa and since 1196 it has been known as Eszek. This is the root of its present name. Osijek has the largest quantity of green areas and the largest number of parks of all Croatian towns: there are 17 parks there, covering 394.000 m2.
