Karlovac is located near four rivers. The town grew at a crossroads and it connects the coastal and the continental part of Croatia. Karlovac is a town with a birthday because we know when it was built. Although it had been inhabited since the ancient times, its birthday falls on 13 July 1579 because the construction of the fortress began on that day. The town was named after its founder, the Archduke Charles II.
