A legend says that during a Turkish siege of Đurđevac the soldiers defending the town had spent all their food supplies and were about to surrender. They put the last cockerel into the cannon and fired it towards the Turks. Seeing that the defenders are squandering their food, the Turks thought they would never capture Đurđevac, so they retreated. Since then the townspeople have been called picoki – the cockerels!
